gwen puts maybe some mild effort into not looking like a drowned rat when she leaves the house, but it's still altogether a fairly unimpressive picture. she feels like someone susannah could step on like a bug, if she so chose.
and she's taller than gwen expected, even taking the whole standing thing into account. ]
Uh, hi. I'm Gwen.
[ she lifts her hand in greeting, the meekest little wave. ]
[ She waves back. This girl looks so nervous that is making her even more nervous as well. And Susannah was half hoping Gwen wouldn't show up, because didn't have the faintest idea of what to do next. ]
I've actually never entered. Care to join me for a walk?
[ susannah's the one who asked for this rendezvous, so gwen can't imagine she's even more nervous than she is. being a sensible person, she can't even work out whether this is a good idea or not. it probably isn't. ]
I cut through it all the time for - work and school and stuff. It's nice. A little chilly now, but - nice.
[ There isn't really much to say, because Susannah really has nothing on that. But they walk on anyway, silent and a bit awkward. She needs a moment to put her thoughts in order once more, now that she has seen Gwen face to face.
It's only after five minutes, more or less, that Susannah speaks. ]
I wanted you to know that I'm not- I'm not angry, Gwen. Not at you, nor at Eddie. Maybe a bit at myself. [ She turns to look at her, trying to put her feelings to words. It's easy to be hurtful without meaning to. ] Eddie is...really easy to like. He's not entirely away of it, I bet, but he tends to move through life in such a way that it's hard for others not to want to follow. I know this because it happened to me, too.
So trust me when I say, you liking him...loving him? It's nothing I could blame you for.
What's far more stranger is actually loving someone back. [ Susannah shivers, although she's not really that cold. ] And he does, you know? He does love you, maybe not the same way he loves me, because circumstances and what not, but I can't pretend his feelings for you to be any less meaningful than those he has for me.
[ It takes a lot of strength to say that out loud, but she does. Suze puts a hand on Gwen's shoulder. ]
He saw- he sees something in you. Something special. And for there to be someone like that with him... I'm grateful, Gwen.
[ it's gwen's turn not to know what to say. not that anything that susannah has to say is unwelcome. it's quite the opposite. civil - more than civil, warm, downright welcoming. she's not entirely sure what it is that she's being welcomed into, though.
maybe it's enough that she hasn't been outright rejected or yelled at.
she should've expected better from anyone eddie would love as much as suze, though. and maybe she should've expected better from the woman she read about in the books. but gwen's nerves have definitely gotten the better of her in this case, and she's being a lot less sensible then she can normally count on herself for.
she looks up in surprise when there's suddenly a hand on her shoulder, swallows whatever strong emotion she's feeling. ]
I never meant... [ she breathes out, trying to sort her thoughts. ] I never wanted to get in the way, or in the middle of your relationship. I really - this might sound stupid in light of everything, but I have nothing but respect for what the two of you share and I would never want to diminish that or - push my way in anywhere I don't belong.
You're married, and you've been through a lot together.
[ she's not trying to compare herself. that's all she means. and maybe that's the right thing to say and maybe it isn't - she honestly doesn't know. ]
He's really something. And - I'm glad you guys are together here. I know it was hard on him, being without the group.

[ oh. of course she picked up. she wanted to talk to her, right? right. ]
Hi. This is Gwen Stacy? I'm returning your call.
[ i'm returning your call! i'm not at all in love with your husband! all kinds of things. ]

[ Welp. ]
I would rather we talk in person, if that's okay with you? I'll understand if you wouldn't, though.

Whatever you want.

Benson Park. One hour? I'll be by the entrance. I hope to see you there.
[ And she hangs out of nerves. ]
---
[ She's hard to miss, Susannah. She's the one person not entering the park and looking like she's positively waiting for someone.
She also looks hella nervous. ]
